How to Fundraise for Your Volunteer Trip

I've been fundraising for my humanitarian trip to Thailand next month and I thought I'd share some of the things that worked for me.

  • Bake Sale

My friend and I held a bake sale on a Saturday morning during a neighborhood garage sale, priced everything at $1 or $2, and raised $750 in five hours. We advertised ahead of time on social media and explained that donations would help us serve orphans in Thailand. Family members helped by waving signs on street corners. We had donation jars and people were willing to donate extra.

  • Ask for donations

I sent emails to all of my friends and family. I wrote about why I was inspired to volunteer, used personal experiences to illustrate it, and asked if people would donate. Sending generic mass emails is less personal so I sent individual emails and addressed everyone by name. I raised $1,500+ by simply asking for donations. People are generous and often want to donate to a good cause.

  • Fundraising website

There are many fundraising websites including GoFundMe and YouCaring. I chose YouCaring and raised $487 in two weeks. Write about personal stories and why you are inspired to volunteer. Remember to post about it on social media. Be aware, these websites take a small portion of your donations, but because it allows people to donate with credit or debit cards, it may be worth it.

  • Summer camps for kids

Do you have a secret talent? Whether it's music, art, cooking, or building, there is something that you can share with people in a fun and creative way. Doing a summer camp for kids is a great idea because parents want a break. They'll gladly send their kid away for a few hours to learn something fun and useful while they take time for themselves.
